YMCA Celebrates Week of International Events

As part of the YMCA’s commitment to embracing diversity and strengthening community, the YMCA of Central Kentucky is holding a series of events with an international flavor during coming week:

Mid-Autumn Moon Celebration
September 10, 2-4 p.m.
Beaumont Centre Family YMCA
Everyone is invited to come out for this free community event that will feature Chinese lantern-making, moon cakes and more. Register in advance at the Beaumont Centre Family YMCA or at www.ymcaofcentralky.org. This event precedes the Moon Festival Celebration presented by the KY Chinese American Association from 4-8 p.m. For more information, please call the Beaumont Centre Family YMCA at 219-9622.

Exclusive Film Screening
September 13, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. or September 15, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
High Street YMCA
“Hawo’s Dinner Party: A New Face of Southern Hospitality” is a 30-minute documentary following the path of a refugee and former nurse from Somalia who has come to work at the nearby Tyson Foods chicken processing plant. Dressed in colorful hijab even on the assembly line, Hawo is determined to learn English and to connect with her neighbors. But as news of “home grown terrorism” appears in the national media and as Hawo tries to reach out, we get an intimate glimpse into the honest – and often uncomfortable – confrontations that emerge. “Hawo’s Dinner Party” shows what happens when newcomers and “welcoming ambassadors” communicate and work together to transform their community, even under the most challenging times. Discussion to follow facilitated by Lexington community leaders. Spaces are limited, so participants must register in advance for this free screening at the High Street YMCA. For more information, please call Vicki at the High Street YMCA at 367-7343.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration
September 15, 5:30-7:00 p.m.
North Lexington Family YMCA
This festive celebration of Hispanic heritage and culture will include craft projects such as making a sombrero or a Mexican flag, sampling food, a piñata, informal soccer games and more! This event is free and open to the public and no advance registration is required. For more information, please call the North Lexington Family YMCA at 258-9622.
