YMCA BLACK ACHIEVERS AWARDS BANQUET HONORS STUDENTS AND VOLUNTEERS

The 23rd annual YMCA Black Achievers Awards banquet was held on Saturday, April 19. Rebekah Dailey, a senior at Henry Clay High School, was honored as the Youth Achiever of the Year. The Special Achiever of the Year was awarded to Vince Bingham, coordinator of multi-cultural affairs at Transylvania University.

The Community Achiever of the Year award went to Emmett "Buzz" Burnam, the University of Kentucky's Director of Recruitment and Diversity Initiatives. Burnam has played a key role in increasing the university's enrollment of black students.

The YMCA of Central Kentucky Black Achievers is the catalyst that provides exposure to present and future educational/career opportunities, instills positive social values, ignites students’ thirst for knowledge, enables students to reach their full potential by creating opportunities for adults and the community to participate in their lives, and empowers families to assist students in reaching higher goals.

The YMCA of Central Kentucky Black Achievers program connects students with positive adult role models in the community, offering program activities designed to give 7th – 12th grade students exposure to career, educational and social opportunities that are not readily available to them. These opportunities enable students to make informed decisions and develop the skills necessary to compete successfully in life.

The Beaumont entre Family YMCA held a "Kiss the Pig" event to raise funds for the YMCA of Central Kentucky's Campaign for Kids. Jars placed around the Y for the past month featured pictures of various YMCA staff members, with the staff members who received the most money in their jars having to kiss a pig. On Friday, March 21, four Beaumont Centre YMCA employees puckered up to Willy, whose owner, Brandon Wilford, offered up the 320-pound pig for the event.

The Kiss the Pig drive raised $1,339.22 for Campaign for Kids. Diane Nicely, Executive Director of the Beaumont Centre YMCA, received the most money in her jar, followed by Mario Hughley and Rae Lynn Burke. Those three, along with Vicki Feola, the event coordinator and the Beaumont YMCA's Teen and Family Director, kissed the pig in front of crowd of onlookers outside the YMCA, many of whom then went inside for the Y's Family Night showing of "Charlotte's Web."
